Armitage Shanks Announce First Album in 22 Years – 14 Tracks of Unadulterated Punk Mayhem

The cult punk outfit return for their eighth album, with Billy Childish recruited on bass and production duties for a new collection of 14 tracks.

After more than two decades away from the album-making business, Armitage Shanks are back. The band have announced their eighth LP, their first in 22 years, bringing together a cast of familiar misfits for another gloriously chaotic dose of punk rock.

According to the band’s own suitably deranged account, vocalist Dick Scum summons guitarist Rod Vomit with a plan to enlist avant-garde collagist Kurt Von Schitters, aka Billy Childish, to play bass and produce the record. The recruitment apparently rests on an old favour owed for chauffeuring Thee Headcoats around the place — and, naturally, knowing where the bodies are buried.

With Wolf, aka St Chalfont, drafted in on drums, the unlikely operation heads to Ranscombe Studios, where Von Schitters sets about tidying up the band’s “rubbish tunes” while Bludy Jim hits play and the racket begins in earnest.

Things take a turn when Rod Vomit’s hand cramps up from what the band describe as the ‘wristing of the punk’. Enter his 14-year-old son, Galapagos, whose guitar-playing skills save the day. The family affair extends further, with Miss Spendapenny screaming her way through the closing track on side one and Von Schitters’ son, Atticus, lending his voice to the finale of side two.

The result is a 14-track blast of irreverent punk, complete with the band’s trademark absurdist humour and a tracklisting that takes in everything from ‘Thoughts of Violence’ and ‘Banned From the Shops’ to ‘Television Addict’, ‘God is My Barber’ and ‘What Do I Get?’.

Whether this long-awaited return required elaborate deception, a deceased uncle’s collection of sovereign rings or simply a willingness to embrace the ridiculous, Armitage Shanks have made it back to the studio — and, by the sound of things, they haven't mellowed with age.

Fourteen tracks of maximum drums, racket and punk-rock nonsense await. Armitage Shanks are back, and subtlety was never on the agenda.
