If You Got Married Tomorrow, What Song Would You Choose?
If you were told today that you were getting married tomorrow, there would be plenty of last-minute decisions to make. The venue would need to be ready, the guests would need to know where to go and, of course, the wedding outfit would have to be prepared.
But among all the planning, there is one question that can be surprisingly difficult to answer: what song would you choose for your first dance?
For generations, music has played an important role in weddings. From walking down the aisle to the final song of the evening, music can help create some of the most memorable moments of the day. But the first dance is often the moment when a couple gets to choose a song that feels truly personal to them.
For some people, the decision is easy. There may already be a song that reminds them of the day they met, their first holiday together or a special moment in their relationship. For others, finding the right song can take weeks of listening, discussing and changing their minds.
As for me and my wife our first dance was to Just The Way You Are by Billy Joel
From classics to modern favourites
Traditional wedding songs remain popular, with romantic classics continuing to appear on wedding playlists year after year. Songs such as At Last by Etta James and Can't Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley have become closely associated with romance and weddings.
However, many couples are now turning to more modern music when choosing their first dance. Ed Sheeran's Perfect, John Legend's All of Me and other contemporary love songs have become familiar choices at weddings around the world.
The popularity of these songs highlights how wedding traditions are changing. Rather than simply choosing the song that is considered the most romantic, couples increasingly want something that represents their own relationship.
For a couple who grew up listening to a particular band, their wedding could be the perfect opportunity to choose one of that band's songs. For another couple, a song released during the year they met could have a special significance.
It is not always about romance
While first-dance songs are traditionally slow and romantic, not every couple wants a conventional wedding soundtrack.
Some newlyweds choose an upbeat song that reflects their personalities. Others pick something unexpected simply because it makes them smile.
A couple might choose a song that reminds them of nights out with friends, while another might select a track from a favourite film or television programme. For some, the lyrics matter most. For others, it is the melody, the memories attached to the song or simply the feeling it creates.
And then there are those who would rather avoid the traditional first dance altogether.
Some couples choose to invite their guests onto the dance floor immediately, turning the first dance into a celebration involving everyone rather than a formal moment shared by two people.
The song can tell a story
Music has a unique ability to bring back memories. Hearing just a few seconds of a familiar song can transport someone back to a particular place or moment.
That is one reason choosing a wedding song can feel like such an important decision.
Imagine hearing your first-dance song years later. It could immediately remind you of the room, the people around you and the moment you stood together as newlyweds.
For couples who have been together for several years, the song may represent a chapter of their relationship. It might be the song that was playing when they first met, one they listened to during their first road trip together or simply something they always sing along to in the car.
In that sense, the best wedding song may not necessarily be the most popular one. It may simply be the one that means the most to the couple.
What would you choose?
So, if someone told you that your wedding was happening tomorrow, which song would you choose?
Would you go for a timeless classic such as Can't Help Falling in Love? Would you choose a modern favourite such as Perfect? Or would you ignore the traditional choices altogether and select a song that has a completely different meaning to you and your partner?
Perhaps it would be a song that nobody else would expect.
That is part of what makes wedding music so interesting. There is no single correct answer. A song that means nothing to one person could be incredibly important to another.
With weddings becoming increasingly personal, couples are finding new ways to make their celebrations reflect who they are. The first dance is just one small part of the day, but it can become one of the moments that guests remember most.
And while wedding trends will continue to change, one thing is unlikely to disappear: the desire to find a song that captures the feeling of being in love.
So, if you really did have to get married tomorrow, what song would you choose?
It could be a classic. It could be a chart hit. It could be a song nobody has ever heard before.
The only requirement is that, when you hear it years from now, it takes you straight back to the day you said, “I do.”
