Sadurn Share New Single ‘the weight’ Ahead of Sophomore Album The Underworld

The Philadelphia indie-folk band unveil an emotionally charged new track ahead of Friday’s album release via Run For Cover Records, with US and Canadian tour dates announced for November.

Philadelphia-based indie-folk band Sadurn have released their new single, ‘the weight’, the opening track from their forthcoming sophomore album, The Underworld, arriving Friday, 16 October, via Run For Cover Records.

Following the acclaimed release of their 2022 debut album, Radiator, the band continue to develop their distinctive blend of alt-country, bedroom pop and intimate indie rock. The new record finds songwriter G DeGroot exploring deeply personal themes of heartbreak, physical and emotional recovery, and the difficult process of finding a way forward after periods of uncertainty.

‘the weight’ offers a particularly affecting introduction to the album, capturing the emotional complexity of a relationship coming to an end through candid songwriting and expressive instrumentation. The track is accompanied by an official music video, available to watch on YouTube.

Discussing the recording, DeGroot expressed particular pride in guitarist Jon’s contribution to the song, highlighting a guitar solo that became one of their favourite moments on the album.

Although the band had planned to give Jon the option of overdubbing the solo to relieve the pressure of performing it live with the group, his initial take proved so emotionally powerful that they decided to keep it.

DeGroot also spoke candidly about the song's subject matter, describing it as another exploration of queer heartbreak.

“There’s so much pain in that moment where you are reckoning with the end of a relationship, especially because it’s usually never clean—you oscillate, you can’t comprehend the deterioration of something so beautiful and meaningful, you want to fight for it,” DeGroot explains.

“The weight of the decision is so overwhelming, it can feel like you’re breaking under it. That’s what I was processing, that’s what this song captures, I hope.”

The Underworld Explores Heartbreak, Healing and Self-Discovery

Sadurn first began as a personal creative and emotional outlet for DeGroot before an unexpected connection with Run For Cover Records helped bring the project to a wider audience. Their debut album, Radiator, released in 2022, quickly attracted critical attention and established the band as a compelling voice within contemporary indie folk.

However, the success of the record also brought new pressures. DeGroot explains that the expectations surrounding the band began to affect their relationship with songwriting, particularly as their sense of identity became increasingly intertwined with the project.

At the same time, DeGroot was navigating a difficult breakup alongside ongoing physical health challenges, including chronic pain, vocal problems and digestive issues. The combination made it increasingly difficult to maintain the momentum surrounding the band.

“I was having chronic pain, problems with my voice, gut issues,” DeGroot recalls. “It felt so urgent to try and keep things going, but my body was saying no.”

These experiences became central to the creation of The Underworld, an album that traces a journey towards emotional and physical recovery while examining the relationship between suffering, transformation and self-understanding.

The record draws on intimate, everyday details while reaching towards more metaphysical questions about healing and personal change. Through its combination of vulnerable songwriting, understated arrangements and expansive emotional themes, Sadurn explore how difficult experiences can become opportunities for rediscovering oneself.

For DeGroot, the album's title represents both a period of hardship and the possibility of emerging from it with a renewed sense of clarity.

“The underworld is the hard times, but it’s also about getting back,” they explain. “You go into the underworld so you can find clarity about your own being and come back changed.”

They continue: “That’s just my fundamental belief about healing, it’s not about wallowing but you do need to move towards the darkness in order to transform it and get unstuck. It’s how you discover your most important powers.”

Sadurn Announce November US and Canadian Tour Dates

To coincide with the release of The Underworld, Sadurn will embark on a run of North American dates in November, with support from Kitchen and Hemlock.

The tour begins in Durham, North Carolina, on 7 November before travelling through Richmond, Washington, DC, Portland, Montreal, Toronto, New York and Boston, concluding with a hometown-area performance in Philadelphia on 20 November.

The shows will give audiences an opportunity to hear material from the new album alongside songs from Radiator, bringing Sadurn's intimate, emotionally direct songwriting to venues across the US and Canada.

With The Underworld, Sadurn build on the foundations of their debut while moving towards a more reflective and expansive sound. The album's opening track, ‘the weight’, sets the tone for a collection concerned with the difficult realities of love, loss and recovery, offering a glimpse into a record shaped by the search for a way back to oneself.
