@ Share New Single ‘I Know You Are (But What Am I Thinking)’ Ahead of Debut 4AD Album Autosmile

The Philadelphia art-folk duo unveil their latest single and thermal-imaging music video ahead of Friday’s album release, following widespread acclaim for the title track.

Philadelphia-based art-folk duo @ (pronounced ‘at’) have shared their new single, ‘I Know You Are (But What Am I Thinking)’, the latest preview of their forthcoming album Autosmile, arriving this Friday, 16 October, via 4AD.

The track is the most immediate and catchy offering from the album’s four singles, bringing together chamber-pop arrangements, medieval flourishes, twinkling keys and swaying violin. The result highlights the duo’s imaginative songwriting and instinct for intricate harmonies, balancing an accessible melodic sensibility with their distinctive experimental approach.

Reflecting on the new single, the band said: “This is the most emo song on the record - we met our emo threshold with this one. Album out Friday thanks for listening!”

The release is accompanied by a music video directed by Sage Caswell, created in collaboration with the duo using thermal-imaging cameras, adding a striking visual dimension to the track’s unconventional character.

@ Explore Psychedelic Folk on New Album Autosmile

Comprised of multi-instrumentalist songwriters Victoria Rose and Stone Filipczak, @ have developed a distinctive musical partnership built around shared creativity and complementary songwriting styles. Their process typically sees each member contribute half of the songs, with both filling in the gaps in the other's compositions and Filipczak overseeing production.

Away from the band, Rose works as a beekeeper, while Filipczak is a self-taught computer programmer. Together, however, they form an experimental songwriting partnership that draws on psychedelic folk traditions while pushing towards a contemporary art-pop sound.

On Autosmile, the pair balance beauty and unease, moving between shadowy, heavy passages and moments of patient reflection. Baroque arrangements, unexpected progressive-rock flourishes and inventive production give the songs an intricacy that sits alongside their strong melodic foundations.

The album follows the duo’s 2021 debut, Mind Palace Music, which gradually built an audience through word-of-mouth recommendations and critical recognition. In 2024, they released the EP Are You There God? It’s Me, @, exploring more electronic territory while stepping away from their usual acoustic instrumentation.

Their forthcoming 4AD debut brings these different elements together, combining confessional songwriting with an interplay of digital and analogue sounds. Although the material often carries a dark emotional undercurrent, the project retains a playful streak, with unexpected arrangements and stylistic shifts woven into its songwriting.

‘Autosmile’ Earns Pitchfork’s Best New Track Recognition

The new single follows three previously released tracks that have offered a glimpse into the album’s expansive sound.

‘Bird’ pairs eerie chromatic acoustic guitar with cinematic clarinet passages before opening into uplifting choral harmonies. ‘Punish My Mind’ takes a more distorted, unpredictable direction, combining fluttering woodwinds with unusual, abrasive vocal sounds in a track that evokes a dystopian take on classic pop.

The album’s nearly seven-minute title track, ‘Autosmile’, has already attracted significant critical attention, earning Pitchfork’s Best New Track recognition and helping establish the record as one of the duo’s most closely watched releases to date.

In recent years, @ have also built a reputation as an engaging live act, performing support shows alongside Snail Mail, Cameron Winter and Black Country, New Road.

@ Announce Further North American Shows for 2027

Alongside the album release, @ have announced a North American headline tour for January 2027. The run begins with a hometown performance in Philadelphia on 16 January before taking in the duo’s biggest headline shows yet in New York at Bowery Ballroom and Los Angeles at Zebulon.

The dates follow the band’s current North American support run with YHWH Nailgun and This Is Lorelei, as well as their November 2026 UK and European headline dates. The upcoming European tour includes two sold-out performances at London's St Matthias Church on 18 and 19 November.

The UK itinerary also includes Bristol, Leeds, Glasgow, Birmingham and Manchester, with further dates across Ireland and mainland Europe before the run concludes in Brussels on 24 November.

With Autosmile, @ continue to carve out a distinctive space within contemporary experimental folk, bringing together intricate musicianship, unconventional textures and emotionally direct songwriting. Their latest single offers another glimpse into the duo’s restless creative partnership ahead of the album’s arrival this Friday.
